IT’S GATHER FOR GOATS TIME!

Gather for Goats is a worldwide effort by hundreds of our volunteers, friends, and families, who come together to host events large and small, asking their guests to donate what they would have spent going out to our goat fund. In Jordan, our Gather for Goats program is thriving. Since the start of the program, we’ve distributed 800 goats to 400 Syrian families, and 900 baby goats have been born. The Syrian refugees who receive these goats are feeding their children with goat milk and regaining hope as they start back down the path of economic security!

HELP US MEET OUR 2019 GOAL

This year, we aim to do even more. On September 13–14, hundreds of supporters will leverage the power of peer-to-peer fundraising by hosting Gather for Goats fundraising parties around the world.

We want to raise $300,000 to buy 1,000 more goats!

Peer-to-peer fundraising is incredibly effective. We want to empower you to raise funds by hosting goat parties, small dinners, picnics, or even lemonade stands.

And this year, there’s one more reason to get involved—a generous and anonymous foundation has agreed to match the first $120,000 we raise!

This means that every dollar you and your guests donate between September 1 and October 31 will be doubled! So if September 13 or 14 doesn’t work for you, feel free to host your event anytime during the matching period.

BUY A GOAT AND YOU GET TO NAME IT!

This year, we will be putting name tags on the goats. If you donate $300 (the cost of one goat), you can name the goat your funds will purchase. Donate $600, name two goats!

WHY GOATS?

A lot of organizations make the mistake of going into refugee areas with a specific expertise, when the population may not actually need that service. We go in, assess the actual need, and fill that gap. In 2017, we spoke to several Syrian refugee families who live in unofficial camps in Northern Jordan. Their greatest need? Goats.

Goats provide refugee families with:

  • NUTRITION. Goat milk provides for the nutritional needs of the refugees, who currently lack a stable food supply and are often deficient in protein.

  • INCOME. Goats provide sustainable income for the families who can sell both the milk and the offspring.

  • LIFESTYLE. Goats support the natural Bedouin lifestyle that they have enjoyed for centuries. The gift of a goat helps them provide for themselves in the same way their families have done for generations. This also brings psychological support, as it returns a piece of normalcy, a bit of familiarity.

HOW IT WORKS

We partner with a local Jordanian organization who provides these families with basic necessities, such as drinking water and bulk dry food. They have identified several hundred families who will greatly benefit from the gift of goats. This org also visits the recipient families on a monthly basis to check on the health of the goats.

We, along with a goat expert from the University of Amman, are present at every goat distribution to inspect the goats and meet recipient families. It is a beautiful experience to witness dignity being restored to families.
